HOSENSACK CREEK AT MILL HILL PRESERVE
A STREAM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Hosensack Creek at Mill Hill Preserve
Stream bank restoration and in-stream habitat enhancement
COMPLETED: September 2020
Location: Mill Hill Preserve, Palm PA
Partners: Perkiomen Trout Unlimited, Upper Hanover Township, Coldwater Heritage Partnership, Montgomery County Conservation District, David J. Schneck Logging Inc.
Project Description: Hosensack Creek is a small stream tributary to the Perkiomen Creek near Palm, PA that supports naturally reproducing wild brown trout. This project initiative focused on repair and remediation of a severely eroded 4.5 ft, 180-ft long stream bank within the boundaries of the Mill Hill Preserve. Design and construction features included a combination of modified mud sills, log vane deflectors, and multiple root wad deflectors, and in-stream boulder placements. Following construction and installation of the structures, live-stakes were planted along the disturbed stream bank and riparian corridor. Improvements significantly reduced stream bank erosion and sedimentation, as well as providing better habitat for fish, invertebrates, and other ecologically critical flora and fauna.
