First snow & ice are in the forecast—go easy on the salt!
As winter kicks off in the Perkiomen Valley, remember that excess de-icer washes into our creeks, raising chloride levels that stress brook & brown trout and the bugs they eat.
Smart de-icing tips:
• Shovel first to remove snow/ice mechanically
• Use a light hand—about a coffee cup per 10 sidewalk squares
• Treat ice only, not dry pavement (grains should be spaced out)
• Sweep up leftovers after melt so it doesn’t wash into drains
• Know the limit: rock salt stops working around 15°F
Small changes at home add up across the watershed—thanks for helping keep our waters cold, clean, and fishy!
