TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM
Educating Future Generations
"What's the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?"
Henry David Thoreau
Trout Unlimited’s environmental education program is a gateway stewardship experience for students. It fosters a new generation of advocates for salmonids and the watersheds in which they live. Via the Trout In the Classroom program, students raise trout from eggs to fingerlings in their classroom, monitor water quality, and learn about aquatic ecosystems. This hands-on, interdisciplinary program fosters conservation ethics and culminates in releasing the young trout into a local stream. It connects academic subjects like science and math with real-world environmental issues, teaching students about biology, habitat, water quality, and the importance of protecting coldwater resources.
Perkiomen Valley Trout Unlimited facilitates this program at local schools. This includes coordinating with TU National, installing and maintaining classroom equipment, and a “TIC Release Day” for each school. At release day the students are treated to a multi-station field trip, including a macroinvertebrate station, riparian area station, fly tying station, fly casting lessons, and more. At the end of the day, the students release the trout they raised into the local stream.
PVTU is proud to partner with AQUA, Montgomery County Conservation District, and local schools to provide the Trout In The Classroom program.
