PVTU was awarded Winner of the PA Council of Trout Unlimited’s 2024 Best Chapter Project. This award recognized two projects that were completed this July and August.
Camelot Park
Our project on the Perkiomen Creek, located within Camelot Park in East Greenville, was completed in July 2024. The project includes 23 log structures consisting of 21 multi-log vane defectors, a root wade deflector and a 300’ modified mud sill across 1800 feet of the creek. Boulders were added to the stream bed to create habitat for fish, reptiles, and insects.
The structures and boulders were installed under the supervision of Kellers Small Streams Solutions utilizing a team of operators and equipment from Upper Hanover Township in partnership with Flyway Excavating, Inc. Funding for the project included grants from the Schuylkill River Restoration Fund (SRRF) and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), plus cash and in-kind contributions from Upper Hanover Township, PVTU, Kellers Small Streams Solutions, and the Montgomery County Conservation District.
Longacre Phase II
The Longacre Phase 2 Erosion and Sedimentation/Habitat Improvement project on the West Branch of the Perkiomen Creek was completed in August 2024. A combination of approximately 15 new structures including modified mud sills, multi log vanes, and brush deflectors were successfully installed by Flyway Excavators, supervised by Keller Small Stream Solutions.
The project work covers an approximately 1100 foot section on the upper reaches of the stream on the Longacre farm.
Funding for the project included grants from the Schuylkill River Restoration Fund, Berks County Conservation District, and the estate of Dwight Gehman, plus in-kind volunteer hours and funds from PVTU. This extraordinary work will continue to build upon the Longacre family’s generous legacy of working with PVTU to ensure West Branch Perkiomen Creek maintains it’s Class A wild trout water status today and into the future.
